On Paintings

I am fascinated with how we relate to one another, what we reveal about each other, how we interact with our natural and material surroundings, how we expand or limit ourselves, where we spend energy. We consciously and unconsciously create and determine our personal and collective reality by the choices we make moment to moment.

I have lived on Salt Spring Island over 4 decades. During 25 years as a painter, I continually find myself returning to an intense sense of belonging, a mysterious deep sense of place. My work began and continues to be an integration of life in an island community, interactions with people, nature and everyday experiences.

Abstraction found me. It provided freedom to probe and question without the necessity to adhere and rely on existing light, people or scenes. The literal act of painting on a flat surface has offered a profound and satisfying method to explore the mystery of my questions. Colour is essential to my probing. With colour's infinite spectrum my exploration began and continues. I have glimpses of answers but realize the mystery remains unfathomable.
