Margie Korrison
Born in San Francisco, California, Margie spent summers traveling and camping with her family in western United States and Alaska. Nature became a very powerful influence on the depth and quality of her life's experiences but a visit to the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park at the age of four exposed her to abstract art, beginning an affinity that remains to this day.
While earning her Bachelor of Education, Margie also majored in Art and Spanish. After teaching in Washington State, she immigrated to Canada in 1968 teaching kindergarten at Salt Spring Elementary School, Ganges, Salt Spring Island. In 1971, she immigrated to Australia to work as a primary school teacher, returning to Salt Spring Island in 1975. Upon her return, Margie began to explore in earnest her creative life as a mother; designer; dressmaker; fabric artist; and a contributing member of the thriving cultural community. Margie has exhibited regularly as an abstract artist in Victoria and on Salt Spring Island since 1989. Her paintings are in private collections in Canada and the United States. Commuting daily from Salt Spring, Margie attended The Victoria College of Art (VCA) from 1988 to 1992. Receiving an Associate of the VCA, she studied under Joseph Kyle (director), Bill Porteous, Jim Gordaneer, Jim Corte and Jim McGrath. Margie was a founding member of the VCA Alumni Association in 1992. From 1995 she was active in the Alliance of Salt Spring Artists. In the 1980's Islanders will remember exhibits of Margie's richly-coloured pieced-silk scarves and kimonos. In 2011 the remainder of this collection went to New York City to be used in fashion photography. Margie toured Europe during 2006/07. In Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Venice, Paris and Heidelberg her focus was on art and architecture. |
I am fascinated with how we relate to one another, what we reveal about each other, how we interact with our natural and material surroundings, how we expand or limit ourselves, where we spend energy. We consciously and unconsciously create and determine our personal and collective reality by the choices we make moment to moment.
I have lived on Salt Spring Island over four decades. During twenty-five years as a painter, I continually find myself returning to an intense sense of belonging, a mysterious deep sense of place. My work began and continues to be an integration of life in an island community, interactions with people, nature and everyday experiences. Abstraction found me. It provided freedom to probe and question without the necessity to adhere and rely on existing light, people or scenes. The literal act of painting on a flat surface has offered a profound and satisfying method to explore the mystery of my questions. Colour is essential to my probing. With colour's infinite spectrum my exploration began and continues. I have glimpses of answers but realize the mystery remains unfathomable.
